As I have mentioned, we found ourselves homeschooling unexpectedly this year. There was not much time to prepare. My initial preparation was entirely consumed in deciding upon curriculum. Preparing our space came later.

In creating a homeschool space, I was not interested in creating a school room at home. Part of the reason we are homeschooling is that my kids needed a break from school. We wanted them to go back to the basics of loving learning and set aside some negative classroom experiences. So quite a bit of our homeschooling takes place while snuggling on couches and recliners. But at times, students need a work surface. Also, we found ourselves with a lot more books, folders and notebooks to store as well as trays of hands-on activities for our Kindergartener.

Our breakfast nook has long served as a craft and homework space. We have an entire pantry devoted to craft supplies. It was not difficult to make this space into a homeschool room. Happily, friends of ours (also homeschoolers) were having a yard sale. When they mentioned they would be selling storage units, I rushed to see what they had. I purchased three Ikea Trofast units, which included both the multilevel unit and the single vertical unit.  The multilevel units, I put in our front hall closet and in Anne's room. Placing the unit in Anne's room freed up a small shelf that I put in our homeschool area along side the vertical unit. The finished project looked like this.

As you can see from the picture, Anne is perfectly happy to sit at the table to work with her Legos. However, I noticed she did not enjoy doing school work at the table. At times, we would work in her bedroom at a small child's table because she was more comfortable sitting in a child-size chair, but I needed an option for her on our main floor. I searched Craigslist and found a perfect desk for her that we placed in a corner of our dining room. Several of our "old-fashioned" toys (such as a pedal fire engine and our doll house) are housed in our dining room, so the desk fits in perfectly with the aesthetic. The desk we found used can be purchased at Amazon here. Anne loves the chalkboard top on the desk.

I wanted to provide Anne with as many math and language manipulatives as possible, but I needed a way to keep them organized and put away when we aren't using them. We are lucky to have some built in storage units in our family room in which we keep games and puzzles. I cleaned these out and freed up two shelves. I carefully selected items for the two top shelves in the unit below that Anne is allowed to pull out during school time. She needs educational activities to work on when I am working with Meg and Clare and this gives her the freedom to choose what interests her.

A few activities that I planned to use during my one-on-one time with Anne, I placed in the bottom of our china cabinet in the dining room so they would be near her desk. I have placed these and other activities on trays that I purchased at Lakeshore Learning many years ago similar to those found here.

I am sure we will make many changes to this set up in the months ahead, but this is working for us quite well right now.

Beautiful Feet Books--Ancient History

11/8/2019

When we made the decision to homeschool, I immediately knew we would use, among other things, books and teacher's guides from Beautiful Feet Books. During the brief time I homeschooled Clare last school year, we used the Geography through Literature Pack from Beautiful Feet Books and it was our favorite things to work on each day.

This year, we began to work through the Ancient History Literature Pack from B.F. Books. Literature packs contain novels relevant to the time period and geographical locations as well as a teacher's guide that sets out a reading plan along with suggested projects, mapping assignments and other recommended activities. For Ancient History, the teacher's guide includes Old Testament readings that correspond with other world events about which you are learning. The literature pack also includes an Ancient History Encyclopedia that provides more detailed information about the subject matter.

We have completed the first section of the Ancient History pack, which is on Sumer and Mesopotamia. For this section, we read the novel The Golden Bull by Marjorie Cowley. This story brought Ancient Ur alive for my girls as we read a few chapters aloud together each school day. Even five-year-old Anne, who was permitted to wander in and out of the room as she wanted, enjoyed the story and joined in the discussions about the story with us.

One of the recommended activities for this section was making cuneiform tablet cookies. We used our new favorite cut-out cookie recipe found here. After cutting out tablet-like shapes, the girls used kabob sticks to carve cuneiform, the writing developed by the people of Sumer.
We also enjoyed making clay cylinder seals. This is a recommended activity in the Ancient History teacher's guide, but I found the most helpful information for making cylinder seals at artclasscurator.com. This site even recommended the best brand of clay, because it is packaged in the necessary shape.

Cylinder seals were carved cylinders that could be rolled onto wet clay to essentially make a stamp. Mixing her ancient cultures a bit, Clare decided to use her cylinder seal to tell the story of Arachne--a character from Greek mythology. These pictures show her cylinder as well as the result of pressing the cylinder on playdough.
We have now moved on to Ancient Egypt in our Ancient History Literature Pack. We have a lot of fun projects ahead of us. We will also be working in some Pilgrim history for the month of November, so I don't know how much that will slow us down in our study of Ancient History. Regardless of the time period, we'll keep making history hands-on and fun.

Cox Farms--Pumpkin Drop Day

11/5/2019

Pumpkin dropping day at Cox Farms has become an annual tradition for our family. Like most families in our area, we regularly visited Cox Farms prior to Halloween. Then one year, we weren't able to get there before Halloween and we tried the weekend after Halloween. On that weekend, staff members ride a crane high into the air every half hour and drop giant pumpkins. We loved it and have been choosing to go on pumpkin dropping weekend ever since.

This year was fun because my husband was able to join us for the first time. He had no idea what to expect and was horrified when he saw how many cars were in the parking lot. But once we entered the festivities, he decided Cox Farms was incredible value.

Because we have been to Cox Farms so often, the girls had our trip planned out before we even entered. They jumped on the stacks of hay at the entrance, which they do every year. We then headed to the Cornundrum corn maze. Rather than being a true maze, Cornundrum is a path through the corn that includes many optical illusions and fun buildings. The girls love the psychedelic school bus, the Egyptian tomb and the house of freakishly huge bugs.
After exiting Cornundrum, we headed towards the Imagination Forest. But before we headed into the forest, we walked through Foamhenge. What is Foamhenge? Well, it is Stonehenge made out of foam. I informed the girls this walk through Foamhenge would count towards their Ancient Studies. (Just kidding!)

We finally made it to the forest, which takes visitors through numerous fairy tales. Some our favorites are the Three Bears house and Alice in Wonderland.
A trip to Cox Farms would not be complete without a few runs down the giant slides. Clare and Anne tackled the caste slide first. They both stood in line for the Jack in the Bean Stock slide, but only Clare came down. She informed us that Anne became scared at the top and a worker was walking her down. A few minutes later she showed up with a kindly worker at the entrance to the slide. I thanked the worker repeatedly.
Finally it was time to go on the hayride. Admittedly the line for the hayride was long, but I assured my husband that the wait was worth it and that they kept the line moving. Thankfully, Cox Farms did not let me down and the line did move with incredible speed. Once on the hayride, we enjoyed it as we always do. We love the aliens running up to the hayride and the catapulting pumpkins. We love the troll stopping us at his bridge and the cowboys that ride up alongside the hayride and allow everyone to pet the horse. Perhaps our favorite is the dance party at the end of the hayride.
So once again we had a great trip to Cox Farms. If you haven't been and live in the area, make sure you go next year. Don't forget the apple cider doughnuts while you are there. No autumn is complete without them.
