A Detective Nun and Growing Gardens

6/13/2014

A few months ago, while randomly searching the Mystery shelf at our local library branch, I discovered the Dame Frevisse Medieval Mystery series by Margaret Frazer. Set in Fifteenth Century England with a nun, who has a family connection to Geoffrey Chaucer, as the detective, I thought I'd give the series a try. I am so glad I did because these books have become my new go-to when I need a fun mystery to read. I am reading the books completely out of order--just as I find them in the library--and currently I'm reading The Sempster's Tale (because of that Chaucer tie, all the books are titled "The [fill in the blank] Tale" in an homage to The Canterbury Tales). This book in the series is set in London and tells the tale of a widowed seamstress/embroiderer, who makes Church vestments. A portion of the book I read yesterday described the long and narrow garden that sat behind the widow's house and was separated by a fence from her neighbors gardens. It immediately made me think of our own garden.

Our shared front yard and far back yard are where the girls run and play. Our fenced in patio is where we garden. A few months ago I shared my hope that our beautiful hydrangea bush was finally returning to life after our bleak winter. This is what the hydrangea looked like at that time.

This is how it looks this morning. I love those tiny little purple flowers.

The widow's garden in The Sempster's Tale is made up of mostly herbs and vegetables. We love our flowers, but have our share of vegetables as well. Our pumpkins are doing phenomenally well and in the picture below you can see our peas growing nicely too.

I think I've previously mentioned the pinwheel flowers pictured above. They were a gift from Grammy to the girls and include a light in the middle of the flower. Just after dark, our garden is lit by these little flowers and fairy lights on the fence (the solar powered fairy lights are all the rage in our neighborhood these days).

This week we've had lots of rain, Meg has had a migraine and Baby Anne and I have been recovering from the worst stomach virus ever. We haven't spent much time in our garden, but I've enjoyed looking out into the garden and watching the flowers and plants grow. Of course, I'm simultaneously noting the weeding and sweeping that need to be done, but mostly I'm enjoying the cozy beauty of having a back garden.

River Farm Gardens

Today does not seem promising at this point. We woke up to an emergency alert alarm on my phone announcing flood warnings. Then Clare, who is never sick, became quite sick. We managed to get Meg to school and things have calmed down considerably, but I am so glad we had a fun afternoon yesterday.

We went to River Farm Gardens which is the home to the American Horticultural Society. It has a wonderful children's garden. Right now, the girls seem to have the most fun at places where they can run, play and fully use their imaginations. Parks and playgrounds are fun, but the right children's garden is ideal.

I wanted to go to River Farm Gardens because there is a child-size cabin there inspired by the Little House books, which, as I have mentioned, we are reading now. But the girls had great fun with all the garden's offerings.

There was the joy of sitting on a sofa made from a hill. Meg gets in trouble for sitting on the back of sofas at home, so she very much enjoyed running on the back of this sofa.

Then there was the great excitement of running through tunnels underground.

No day of fun is complete without a boat journey and River Farm Gardens provides a full-size boat on which kids' imagination can take them wherever they want to go.

Picture
Lest you think garden play is not physical enough, there was much running and climbing as you can see.

Picture

And yes, there was time to sit and ponder what it was like to be Laura Ingalls.

I was only able to convince Meg and Clare to leave with the promise that we would return soon. What a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

A Typical Springtime Afternoon

4/10/2014

Today it hit 70 degrees. With such beautiful spring weather, our initial plan for the afternoon was to go to a garden. But with Brookside Gardens undergoing renovations and River Farm Gardens closed this afternoon to prepare for their spring sale, we decided we should just work in our own garden. After all, a lot of work needs to be done.

We started off by putting in a border to help establish the boundaries of our side garden.

Picture
After adding top soil, we planted peas and pumpkin seeds. Then we added some garden decor, including two giant pinwheels that were a gift from Grammy. (If you are wondering about the plastic bag on Meg's arm in the picture below, we were covering her cast in an attempt to keep it clean.)

Picture
Clare took a break from gardening to create her hedgehog from all natural materials. At school today she collected rocks, grass and other things from nature for the purpose of making a hedgehog. We had quite the negotiations regarding how to transport her collection home. I had the car vacuumed yesterday so I stubbornly refused to allow her to hold her collection in her car seat. We finally decided I would put her collection in a sand sieve in the very back of our car. At home, we again entered into negotiations. This time regarding where the collection would be placed. Much to Clare's displeasure, I put it on our back patio. While she would have preferred to work at an inside table, our gardening time was a great opportunity for Clare to create her hedgehog.

Picture
Clare was kind enough stop work on her hedgehog long enough to paint plant markers. We added these wooden markers to our garden to remind us of what we planted (because I assure you I will forget) and to give the garden a bit of homespun charm.
Picture
After putting the markers in the garden for us, Meg spotted a spider and decided to catch it in her bug catcher. I am sorry to report the spider had a short life. The girls let him out of the bug catcher and "accidentally killed him." I am not sure how this accident occurred--something about trying to pick him up with a stick.
Picture

Our gardening ended with the arrival of the girls' Easter dresses. This year I let Meg and Clare pick their own Easter dresses for the first time. We ordered them online so they were very excited to try them on immediately upon arrival. I must say I like their choices but I will wait until Easter to post pictures of the dresses.

Signs of Life

Last year we attempted some gardening. We planted a hydrangea bush along with some sunflowers and daisies. The sunflowers quickly died. The daisies lived for a while but died in the summer heat. But that hydrangea bloomed beautifully.

Winter was harsh and we weren't hopeful that the hydrangea had survived. It looked so stark and, well, dead. Today, while playing outside, Meg yelled, "Look! Green leaves." As you see pictured above, there are beautiful green leaves on the hydrangea.  We are so excited.  I feel like Dickon in The Secret Garden proclaiming the garden "wick."  Yes, there's life in our garden. Now we just need to add a few more living things.

The First Day of Spring

3/21/2014

What a beautiful day we had for the first day of Spring yesterday. In the past, we have often spent the first day of Spring at a garden--either Green Spring Garden or Brookside Garden. But considering we just had a snow storm, we weren't hopeful that the gardens would be that pretty. So we opted, instead, to do some gardening of our own. We put some potting soil in egg cartons and the girls planted some of their favorite seeds. Clare has been anxiously awaiting planting chamomile (because Peter Rabbit is given chamomile). Meg chose two different varieties of sunflowers.
Picture
The egg cartons have been moved back inside to protect the seeds from the cold weather that is still in our forecast, but oh how we are hoping to be able to put these outside soon. Never has an entire community been so ready for Spring. Every conversation I have with a stranger these days is how much we are looking forward to Spring.

Once we were finished gardening, it was time to continue our enjoyment of the mild weather. My parents gave the girls a wagon for Christmas and they haven't been able to use it much due to the snow. We decided it was a perfect day for a wagon ride. I put Baby Anne in the Bjorn, the girls climbed into the wagon and we headed to the playground.
Picture
The girls pretended I was a horse pulling them in a covered wagon to Grandma's house. I could have used a horse considering I was carrying a 17 pound baby in the Bjorn and pulling a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old in a wagon. What a workout and what a lovely way to spend the day.
