Time change was not easy for Clare. You wouldn't think an hour would make a difference but it makes such a huge difference for toddlers and preschoolers. And when the child has only recently given up napping, the time change can be unbelievably difficult.
On Monday afternoon we found ourselves at a park trying to take advantage of the warmer weather. However, one look at Clare would have caused anyone to question my wisdom in having her out of the house. The dark circles under her eyes were prominent and she just wandered about with the slightest offenses provoking tears. When two boys took a shovel from Clare and Meg, tears turned to sobbing and uncontrollable shaking. Clare just wanted to go home and we did.
As dinnertime approached, Clare fell asleep and I could not wake her up. I finally just put her to bed and she continued sleeping...until 1:30 am. At 1:30 a.m. Clare appeared in my room wondering if it was too early to get up. Yes, I told her and tried to get her to go back to sleep. But not only did she not go to sleep, she kept talking to me and talking and talking. Knowing I could not properly care for three children the following day on just a few hours of sleep, I began to formulate a plan. I would let her watch something on the Kindle so she would let me sleep. But I didn't want to turn on one her favorite movies because I knew she would not let herself go to sleep if she were watching it. Instead I turned on I Love Lucy, certain she would become bored by the black and white television show and go back to sleep.
Oh how I was wrong. I woke up later in the night to have her question me about all the characters. The cutest question being, "What's the name of the boy Lucy loves?" By morning, Clare had become the world's newest fan of I Love Lucy.
On Tuesday afternoon, Clare succoumbed to a nap to make up for her sleepless night. I was able to wake her at a reasonable time, but she still struggled to go to sleep at bedtime Tuesday night. Among her many bedtime questions was "When I get up in the morning, can I watch I Love Lucy?"
