Meg decided she wanted to have her ears pierced for her upcoming birthday. After much thought by her on the subject, she informed me that we needed to have her ears pierced early so that they could heal prior to our Thanksgiving travel. Why? We often stay in a hotel and she wanted to be able to swim. She also informed me that she didn't feel good about going to a typical mall piercing place and that I should research nicer jewelry stores that offer ear piercing.
Almost as a way to get her to stop thinking about it, we had her ears pierced on Wednesday. Today's Cargo, a jewelry store in Old Town Alexandria, offers ear piercing and accepts reservations for ear piercings on week days. After picking the girls up from school, we drove to Old Town. We first stopped at Kilwins, a ice cream and fudge shop. We discovered Kilwins during our Williamsburg trip this summer and we have been wanting to try out their Alexandria location. To the girls' delight, it was Waffle Cone Wednesday at Kilwins and oh how they enjoyed those freshly-made waffle cones.
After our yummy treat, we headed to Today's Cargo. At this point, I could tell Meg was becoming slightly nervous, but she was determined. She looked through the possible earrings she could pick and quickly chose a lovely blue stone with a slightly greenish tint. The lovely woman piercing her ears had Meg hold to Hello Kitty-shaped ice cubes to her ears to numb them. She then marked Meg's ears and pierced them. I'm glad to say that Meg was thrilled with the result.

While the ear piercing was a huge event for us, it was not our only outing of the week. Last weekend we went to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. While lovely in its normal charming way, I must admit the ridiculously hot weather made it more difficult to enjoy the Renaissance Festival. There was a lot of whining. I, however, did want to share a few pictures from our outing.
