We've been very busy Valentine squirrels around here this week. Yesterday Clare decided we needed to make cupcakes. It seemed like a fair request for Valentine's week. I knew we could do it quickly, because I had a cake mix. However, icing was a problem. I had no store-bought icing and I've really never learned how to make good icing. I tried advocating for no-icing cupcakes, but Clare insisted that they must be pink (definitely a nod to Valentine's Day because she usually insists everything be purple). So, I mixed up the standard glaze (1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons water and a few drops of red food coloring). After the glaze had hardened in the refrigerator, the girls sat at the dining room table and iced their cupcakes. They looked okay at the time, but upon opening our cupcake container today (pictured here), I noticed the glaze was melting and they weren't looking so pretty anymore. But I don't suppose it really matters since it is just for us to enjoy.
Our other project has been completing our school Valentine cards. I found a cute design during our last snow storm and had hoped to begin the cards then. However, I soon discovered that we only had blue and green construction paper and I decided that wasn't the best choice for Valentine cards. We restocked a couple of weeks ago and attempted to begin the cards then, but Meg was not initially sold on the design and soon all the hearts I had cut out were used for other crafts. So this week we got to work. Meg stuck with the original design fairly closely (pictured above). She used dot paint to decorate the heart, stuck on googly eyes and added a label that said, "I only have eyes for you." Today we decided to add lollipops just to make them a little more special (Meg said they looked like hair bows).
Clare's Valentine cards are more experimental in nature, but I like them. She drew very detailed pictures (above you see a dog on the right and what I believe is a spider on the left because there are eight legs). Each card is quite different but she did insist on always putting the eyes very close together on one side. Her teacher refers to the three-year-old art projects as Picasso-ing and I believe Clare's placement of the googly-eyes supports this description.
All the Valentine cards are now done and we are set for the school parties that are supposed to be happening tomorrow. But, of course, another snow storm is moving in and the parties will be postponed. At least we are prepared for whenever the parties do occur and it was a fun project for Valentine's week.
