Saint Nicholas Day Market

The girls had an exciting new experience this year. They were able to participate in our area homeschool Saint Nicholas Day market. The kids are invited to bring their own craft projects to sell and they can purchase items from others for a small price. This provides kids with the opportunity to purchase affordable Christmas gifts for siblings or parents.

After much discussion, Meg, Clare and Anne decided to make hot chocolate spoons and candles scented with peppermint and frankincense oil. Strangely, we had all the supplies we needed for the candles including small glass votive holders in which we poured the melted candle wax. For hot chocolate spoons, we purchased plastic spoons, chocolate chips to melt, crushed peppermints to sprinkle over the melted chocolate and cellophane wrappers. 

At the market, there were so many different crafts being offered. We saw wooden swords and daggers, earrings and bracelets, chocolates and cookies, as well as handmade puzzles and beautifully decorated Christmas Cards. We enjoyed purchasing cups of hot apple cider for an affordable 25 cents a cup. 

The girls set up their table and their items sold quite well. The candles in particular were a big hit. They were very happy to have a few of the hot chocolate spoons leftover to enjoy for themselves at home. 

The girls also enjoyed going from table to table and purchasing items from other kids. Anne brought her Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wallet and was so proud to be able to buy things herself. The sweetest part of the evening was when she used her own money to buy me a Holy Family figurine that I had admired. She was so proud to have bought me a gift with her own money and it meant the world to me. She later added a packet of Christmas potpourri to my gift that we can enjoy over Christmas. 

I hope the Saint Nicholas Christmas market becomes part of our Advent celebration every year. We had so much fun.
