With Halloween just two weeks away, the girls and I decided this weekend was the perfect weekend for pumpkin picking. The weather made it even more perfect, because the chilly temperature allowed us to comfortably wear sweatshirts. It truly felt like autumn.
For eight years we have been going to Hollin Farm to pick pumpkins. We go for the view. To get to the pumpkin patch, you must drive up a very steep hill. But once you are up there, the views are splendid. Many of my favorite pictures of the girls throughout the years have been taken at this farm.

Looking through these pictures, there are two things to note. First, Anne wore the same shirt last year to the farm as she did this year. What are the chances of that? Second, this is the first year we brought our dog, Cubby. That is because Cubby became our dog the day after we went to Hollin Farm last year.
Because it is an hour drive to Hollin Farm from our house, I wanted to find a new adventure of some sort in that area. It doesn't take very long to select pumpkins and we really did not want to turn around immediately and drive back home. We decided to go to Sky Meadows State Park, which is just a five minute drive from Hollin Farm.
We had no idea what to expect from Sky Meadows. But we had a package of apple cider doughnuts from Hollin Farm and we decided we could at least have a doughnut picnic and walk Cubby around a little bit. Imagine our delight when we drove into the park and noticed signs to a "Children's Discovery Area."
The Children's Discovery Area is an outdoor space with numerous areas that allow kids to play in nature and use their imaginations. There is a chalkboard/art area. There is an area full of hay bales and stick horses. Our favorite spot was the pioneer area that had a fire place and giant pieces of wood cut like lincoln logs. The girls went to work building their own pioneer cabin.

While the girls played, a group on horses passed us, which added even more to their imaginary pioneer play.
The girls certainly were very impressed with the pioneer house they built, but Cubby felt it would make a better dog house.
Just off the Children's Discovery Area is the Kids in the Park Track Trail, which is an easy trail that is just less than a mile. We thoroughly enjoyed this small hike
The girls had so much fun they wanted to know when we could return to Sky Meadows State Park. I have no doubt that we will return to this park many, many times.
